The Village was inspired by the traditional music of Hungary and Béla Bartok's early work, which was based upon Hungarian folk themes, including Gyermekeknek (for Children). In the early 1900s, Bartok, together with Zoltán Kodály, collected and classified many folksongs, including the song that I have incorporated, "Bereslegeny Jol Megrakd a Szekeret,” in their efforts to record and preserve the traditional music of Hungary. According to some ethnomusicological analyses, Bartok incorporated this folksong into his 20 Hungarian Folksongs for voice and piano.
The Village depicts the contrasts of life in a small community. The heart of my inspiration sprung from the lyrics of the folksong. The folksong talks about the daily work of the villagers, and its lyrics reflect that there is a tension between joy and sadness and work and celebration. The folksong also jokes and teases as a distraction to lighten the load of the unrelenting nature of manual labor needed to support the village.
